Get ready for work—you must wear:

  • a work shirt and pants,
  • work shoes with composite toe caps and puncture-resistant soles,
  • work gloves,
  • dust mask,
  • safety glasses.

Before you start work, remember that in order to proceed with repairs, you must:

  • Complete health and safety training and on-the-job training,
  • Have no health contraindications to performing the work.
  • Be familiar with the operating instructions for the machines and equipment used at your workplace.

Before starting work:

  • Secure the spill site.
  • Prepare the appropriate sorbent (read the operating instructions) for the type of spilled substance.
  • Put on the required personal protective equipment.

During work:

  • Assess whether evacuation from the spill site is necessary.
  • If necessary, contain the spill to prevent it from spreading over a larger area (e.g., use absorbent hoses, oil barriers, or sealing barriers).
  • Spread the appropriate amount of sorbent and, if necessary, mix it with the liquid using a brush.
  • Collect the used sorbent thoroughly (in a sealed container). Full containers are sent for disposal to an appropriate company.
  • Make a note of the incident. Include, among other things, the date, course of events, method of securing the spill, and conclusions. Forward the note to your supervisor.

After finishing work:

  • Make sure that the spill has been completely contained and that the surface is clean and dry.
  • Secure the container with the used sorbent.
  • Clean up the work area, clean the equipment, and return it to its designated place.
  • Clean protective clothing and prepare it for reuse.

What NOT to do?

  • Attempt to wash away the spilled substance with water.
  • Use sorbent that is not suitable for the substance in question.
  • Dispose of used sorbent in bins not intended for this purpose.
  • Attempt to remove the spill without personal protective equipment.

Failure or accident?

  • If something breaks down, stop using the tool and report the fault to your supervisor.
  • If an accident has occurred, do not move anything and inform your supervisor.
  • In the event of an accident, immediately administer first aid to the injured person and, if necessary, call the emergency services.
