Before you start work, remember that in order to proceed with repairs, you must:
- Complete health and safety training and on-the-job training,
- Have no health contraindications to performing the work.
- Be familiar with the operating instructions for the machines and equipment used at your workplace.
Before starting work:
- Secure the spill site.
- Prepare the appropriate sorbent (read the operating instructions) for the type of spilled substance.
- Put on the required personal protective equipment.
During work:
- Assess whether evacuation from the spill site is necessary.
- If necessary, contain the spill to prevent it from spreading over a larger area (e.g., use absorbent hoses, oil barriers, or sealing barriers).
- Spread the appropriate amount of sorbent and, if necessary, mix it with the liquid using a brush.
- Collect the used sorbent thoroughly (in a sealed container). Full containers are sent for disposal to an appropriate company.
- Make a note of the incident. Include, among other things, the date, course of events, method of securing the spill, and conclusions. Forward the note to your supervisor.
After finishing work:
- Make sure that the spill has been completely contained and that the surface is clean and dry.
- Secure the container with the used sorbent.
- Clean up the work area, clean the equipment, and return it to its designated place.
- Clean protective clothing and prepare it for reuse.

What NOT to do?
- Attempt to wash away the spilled substance with water.
- Use sorbent that is not suitable for the substance in question.
- Dispose of used sorbent in bins not intended for this purpose.
- Attempt to remove the spill without personal protective equipment.
Failure or accident?
- If something breaks down, stop using the tool and report the fault to your supervisor.
- If an accident has occurred, do not move anything and inform your supervisor.
- In the event of an accident, immediately administer first aid to the injured person and, if necessary, call the emergency services.
