Before you start work, remember that in order to operate a forklift truck, you must:
- Complete health and safety training and on-the-job training.
- Have no health contraindications to performing the work.
- Be familiar with the operating instructions for the machines and equipment used in the workplace.
- Be familiar with areas where there is a risk of head injury.
Before starting the forklift:
- Check the brakes, steering system, audible signal, wheels, and lifting components.
- Confirm the condition in the forklift inspection log or app.
- Report any faults to your supervisor.
- Ensure that the surface on which you will be transporting goods is as level, non-slippery, and stable as possible.
During operation:
- When picking up a load, drive up to the end of the pallet with the forks lowered as far as possible.
- Make sure that the load you plan to transport complies with the weight and size standards of the forklift.
- Adjust the speed of the forklift to your walking speed.
- Watch the road ahead and your surroundings. Pay attention to the distance between the truck and the racks.
- Remember that releasing the control handle will not stop the truck (set the direction switch to reverse).
- Braking is also performed by setting the control lever to the upper or lower position after releasing the control handle.
- Charge the battery after pressing the emergency button, removing the battery, and placing it in the charging station.
- Do not leave the charging trolley on crossings or paths.
After finishing work:
- Return the goods to the storage area.
- Turn off the truck and remove the key or take the access card.
- Clean the truck and return it to its designated location.
- If you have any comments about the condition of the forklift, write them in the operating log and notify your supervisor.
What SHOULD you do?
- Perform starting and braking maneuvers smoothly, in a manner that does not pose a hazard.
- Adjust the weight of loads to the load capacity of the truck.
- Remember to use audible signals when maneuvering, especially in areas where other employees are present.
What should you NOT do?
- Transport or lift people on the truck.
- Leave the forklift with the key or access card.
- Use faulty chargers to charge batteries.
- Transport unstable goods without the assistance of employees supporting the load on both sides.
- Leave the forklift on escape routes and intersections.
- Allow untrained persons to operate the forklift.
- Use a damaged forklift.
- Repair or service the truck yourself.
- It is forbidden to eat or drink while driving the truck.
- Operate the forklift under the influence of alcohol or intoxicants.
Breakdown or accident?
- If something breaks down, turn off the forklift, secure it against restarting, and report the malfunction to your supervisor.
- If there has been an accident, do not move anything and inform your supervisor.
- Hang a sign on the damaged forklift truck: "EQUIPMENT UNDER REPAIR – DO NOT USE."
