Get ready for work—you must wear:

  • a work shirt and pants,
  • work shoes with composite toe caps,
  • work gloves,
  • a safety helmet (if there is a risk of head injury).

Before you start work, remember that in order to operate a forklift truck, you must:

  • Complete health and safety training and on-the-job training.
  • Have no health contraindications to performing the work.
  • Be familiar with the operating instructions for the machines and equipment used in the workplace.
  • Be familiar with areas where there is a risk of head injury.

Before starting the forklift:

  • Check the brakes, steering system, audible signal, wheels, and lifting components.
  • Confirm the condition in the forklift inspection log or app.
  • Report any faults to your supervisor.
  • Ensure that the surface on which you will be transporting goods is as level, non-slippery, and stable as possible.

During operation:

  • When picking up a load, drive up to the end of the pallet with the forks lowered as far as possible.
  • Make sure that the load you plan to transport complies with the weight and size standards of the forklift.
  • Adjust the speed of the forklift to your walking speed.
  • Watch the road ahead and your surroundings. Pay attention to the distance between the truck and the racks.
  • Remember that releasing the control handle will not stop the truck (set the direction switch to reverse).
  • Braking is also performed by setting the control lever to the upper or lower position after releasing the control handle.
  • Charge the battery after pressing the emergency button, removing the battery, and placing it in the charging station.
  • Do not leave the charging trolley on crossings or paths.

After finishing work:

  • Return the goods to the storage area.
  • Turn off the truck and remove the key or take the access card.
  • Clean the truck and return it to its designated location.
  • If you have any comments about the condition of the forklift, write them in the operating log and notify your supervisor.

What SHOULD you do?

  • Perform starting and braking maneuvers smoothly, in a manner that does not pose a hazard.
  • Adjust the weight of loads to the load capacity of the truck.
  • Remember to use audible signals when maneuvering, especially in areas where other employees are present.

What should you NOT do?

  • Transport or lift people on the truck.
  • Leave the forklift with the key or access card.
  • Use faulty chargers to charge batteries.
  • Transport unstable goods without the assistance of employees supporting the load on both sides.
  • Leave the forklift on escape routes and intersections.
  • Allow untrained persons to operate the forklift.
  • Use a damaged forklift.
  • Repair or service the truck yourself.
  • It is forbidden to eat or drink while driving the truck.
  • Operate the forklift under the influence of alcohol or intoxicants.

Breakdown or accident?

  • If something breaks down, turn off the forklift, secure it against restarting, and report the malfunction to your supervisor.
  • If there has been an accident, do not move anything and inform your supervisor.
  • Hang a sign on the damaged forklift truck: "EQUIPMENT UNDER REPAIR – DO NOT USE."
