Manual transport and order picking

CAPTRON blog picking systems subpage stage (1)

Get ready for work—you must wear:

  • a work shirt and pants,
  • work shoes with composite toe caps,
  • work gloves.

Before you start work, remember that you must:

  • Complete health and safety training and on-the-job training.
  • Have no health contraindications to performing the work.
  • Be familiar with the operating instructions for the machines and equipment used at your workplace.

Before starting work:

  • Check the technical condition of the means of transport.
  • Check the surface on which the transport will be carried out. Make sure it is even, stable, and non-slip.
  • Check the weight of the items being moved, compare it with the standards, and plan your work so as not to exceed them.
  • Transport goods only if they are stable and properly secured (with plastic film, plastic straps, or reusable straps).
  • Check work safety. If in doubt, provide safety measures or re-secure the load if the packaging is damaged.

During work:

  • Lift objects in accordance with ergonomic principles (lift the weight using your leg muscles, keep your back straight).
  • Make sure you have good visibility when moving an object.
  • Stack objects stably, taking into account the center of gravity.
  • When removing items from a stack, remove those on top first; use a ladder or platform for upper shelves.
  • When carrying long and heavy objects, use auxiliary equipment to minimize lifting above ground level.
  • Avoid large twists and unnecessary bending of the torso.
  • When moving objects as a team, ensure:
    • The selection of employees based on height and supervision by an experienced employee.
    • Spacing between employees to allow for free movement (minimum 0.75 m).
    • If necessary, provide auxiliary equipment suitable for transport.
  • When moving objects on your shoulders as a team:
    •  Ensure that objects are lifted and lowered simultaneously (on command).
    • Ensure that people are on one side of the object being carried.
    • Protect your forearms by using personal protective equipment.
  • Use cut-resistant gloves when working with sharp objects.
  • Lift/carry objects with slippery surfaces and sharp edges (sheet metal, repair kits, brake discs, etc.) slowly, holding them with both hands. Watch them and, if necessary (e.g., if they slip out of your hands), react immediately by transferring your grip from one hand to the other (alternately).
  • Move around the plant in accordance with traffic and internal traffic rules.

After finishing work:

  • Tidy up your workplace, and if you have not managed to finish your work, secure the area.
  • Clean the transport equipment and put it back in its designated place.

What is NOT ALLOWED?

  • Lift items that exceed the permissible lifting standards.
  • Move road signs, equipment markings, and information or warning signs on your own.
  • Move large items up stairs, through corridors, or through doors that are too narrow for the size of the items.
  • Use a phone or scanner while transporting items or moving around.
  • Listen to music or the radio, or use earbuds or headphones while working.
  • Climb on shelves, lean on them, or overload them.
  • Stand under an object being moved.
  • Lift and carry sharp items, such as metal sheets, with one hand.
