Handling of manual pallet trucks

8

Get ready for work—you must wear:

  • a work shirt and pants,
  • work shoes with composite toe caps,
  • work gloves.

Before using the stroller:

  • Inspect it thoroughly from the outside – are there any cracks, loose parts, or damage?
  • Check the wheels – are they intact, do they turn freely, and is there anything blocking them?
  • Test the brake – does it stop the trolley without any problems?
  • Assess the load – is it undamaged and securely stacked on the pallet?
  • If you have any doubts, report it to your supervisor and do not use the forklift.

Familiarize yourself with the forklift controls:

  • Service brake – used to stop the truck.
  • Control handle:
    • "LIFT" position – you lift the load,
    • "NEUTRAL" position – you drive the forklift,
    • "LOWER" position – you lower the load.
  • Drawbar – used to steer and move the truck.

Prepare to pick up the load:

  • Check that the load is properly positioned and secured,
  • Check that it does not exceed the forklift's maximum load capacity.
  • Align the forks with the holes in the pallet.
  • Slowly insert the forks until the pallet touches their ends.
  • Before you move, look behind you and make sure the way is clear.

Remember:

  • The load must not protrude more than 50 mm beyond the forks.
  • Distribute the weight evenly across both fork arms.
  • The center of gravity of the load should be in the middle of the forks.

Lifting the load:

  • Set the handle to the "LIFT" position.
  • Move the drawbar up and down to lift the forks with the load.
  • Stop when the load reaches the required height.

Transporting the load:

  • Keep a safe distance from other people, machines, and racks.
  • Watch where you are going. Make sure you have good visibility.
  • If the load obstructs your view, drive backwards or ask someone for help (side assistance).
  • Move slowly, especially on bends, in narrow passages, and in areas with limited visibility.
  • Do not accelerate suddenly, stop abruptly, or overtake in dangerous places.
  • Transport the load at the minimum fork height!

Putting down the load:

  • Position the truck parallel to the storage area.
  • Move the load to its destination.
  • Lower the forks.
  • Carefully reverse the truck.
  • Park the truck in the designated parking area.

After finishing work

  • Clean up the work area and make sure it does not pose a hazard to others.

What is NOT allowed?

  • transport people on the trolley,
  • use a damaged forklift,
  • climb onto the pallet or put weight on the forklift with your foot,
  • transport unstable loads without the assistance of safety personnel,
  • leave the forklift on escape routes and intersections,
  • modify, disassemble, or remove parts of the forklift,
  • allow untrained persons to operate the forklift,
  • eat, talk on the phone, or listen to music while working.

Breakdown or accident?

  • If something breaks down, report it to your supervisor.
  • If an accident has occurred, do not touch anything and inform your supervisor.
  • Hang a sign on the damaged trolley saying: "EQUIPMENT UNDER REPAIR – DO NOT USE."
